0 Foods to be Eaten and be Avoided When on A Diabetic Diethttp://HealthyBalancedDiet.org/

Every person diagnosed with diabetes would only want to make sure that his/her diet is what’s best to prevent and manage diabetes. The good news here is you can still eat your favorite foods and enjoy your meals even when on a diabetic diet guide. Even if a person is on a diabetic diet, he/she still has the same nutritional requirements as other people. There are no wrong or right foods when on this kind of diet. The key here is moderation and being conscious of the amount of food intake. It is also important that a diabetic person follows a diabetic diet chart where it is placed there the meal time and the kinds of foods to eat on each meal.

For a better understanding of what a diabetic diet is about, here is a list of foods that can be eaten and which ones to avoid.

Foods That Can Be Eaten
● You can eat all meat items, such as lamb, beef, pork, bacon
● Meat can also include the organ meats such as liver, kidneys, heart, as they contain high doses of vitamins and minerals required for your body.
● You can have poultry items, such as chicken, goose, duck, turkey, etc.
● All animal and meat fats.
● Fish and seafood of all types can also be eaten.
● Eggs, except ‘omega-3 eggs’.
● You can have all cheeses, except cottage cheese, as it is high in carbohydrate content and has very little fat.
● Butter and cream can also be used. Use butter in cooked vegetables instead of gravy; use cream in hot drinks in place of milk.
● Plain, natural full-fat yogurt.
● Vegetables and fruits, keeping the carbohydrate content in mind.
● Condiments like pepper, salt, mustard, herbs and spices can be readily added to your food.
Foods to Be Avoided
● Avoid sugary foods and artificial sweeteners, including honey. The only sweetener allowed is stevia.
● All types of sweets and chocolates, including the sugar-free ones.
● Grains and food items prepared from wheat, rye, barley, corn, rice, bread, pasta, pastry, cakes, biscuits, pies, tarts, breakfast cereals, and so on.
● Avoid starchy vegetables like potatoes and parsnips in particular; while go easy with beet, carrots, peas, beans, and packets of mixed vegetables which might contain them.
● Beans, except the runner beans.
● Take milk only in small quantities.
● Avoid sweetened fruit and low-fat yogurts.
● Stay away from commercially packaged foods, fast foods and snack foods.
● Follow restraint with respect to fruit juices, as these are quite high in carbohydrates.

What is Diabetes?

Posted by: admin  /  Category: Diabetes Guidelines

0 What is Diabetes?http://HealthyBalancedDiet.org/

Diabetes is one of the most common diseases that most countries face today.

Diabetes or medically known as Diabetes Mellitus is a kind of disease where in the body does not produce enough or utilize well a certain hormone called insulin. This hormone, insulin, is the reason why glucose can get in our cells giving us energy. With no insulin or low levels of insulin, glucose will stay in the blood causing high levels of blood glucose. When this is not treated, high glucose levels can lead to severe damage to the heart, eyes, nerves and kidneys.

Because there are three (3) types of Diabetes, one single type of diabetic diet plan will not work for all. Further understanding of each type of diabetes will help a diabetic know what diet to go for. These types are as follows:

● Type 1 Diabetes — also known as juvenile or insulin dependent diabetes; commonly found amongst young and old having heart disease. In this case, the body cannot produce insulin. Can be treated by means of regular insulin injection for it cannot be controlled solely by diabetic diets or exercise.

● Type 2 Diabetes — also known as non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus or NIDDM or adult-onset diabetes; it is the most common type of diabetes. In this case, the body does not produce enough or utilize insulin well. People who are diagnosed with this kind of diabetes are mostly overweight or obese. It can be managed by means of a diabetic diet plan along with exercise.

● Gestational Diabetes — this type of diabetes is found among women for it develops during the late stages of pregnancy. It usually disappears after pregnancy thus it is temporary. It can be managed by means of a special diabetic meal and regular physical activity. Daily blood glucose testing and insulin injections may be done in some cases.

What should/shouldn’t a diabetic eat? Is there a guideline to go by? Any good detailed websites I can search at?

Diabetics shouln’t eat many carbohydrates such as breads, potatoes, rice, pasta and they should also avoid anything with a high amount of sugar in it’s makeup.Any food containing sugars above 6 grams would not be beneficial to a Diabetic. You can have foods and drinks that are sweetened artificially. If you want to eat breads you can eat 7 grain bread. You can have protein rich foods, fish, meats, and most of all, lots of vegetables.Chocolate and candy is not good for Diabetics.
